Shaking up the World

Shaking up the World

It’s interesting to see that the introduction of a new cabinet style has shaken up the whole industry.

Usually what’s new is the introduction of an old tried and true style. We are seeing that indeed happening with Inset cabinetry beginning a re-introduction after a long hiatus. Moreover, many of the natural wood tones are coming back in vogue, in concert with move toward environmental earth tones. Certainly, this is so with Sage & Kelly green colors gaining notoriety.

The highly popular Rift Cut Oak, with its natural color and straight grain lines, introduced only a year or so ago, is in high demand despite its higher cost. Oak is in the category of hardwood, harder than Maple & Birch, much harder than Cherry & Alder. While these other woods have traditionally been used to produce fine furniture and cabinetry, oak was relegated to the cheaper lines because of its very heavy & dark grain lines. What’s new about Rift Cut Oak is the way they slice the oak tree, this produces very straight vertical grain lines without the dark streaks. Rift Cut is primarily sold with just a minute amount of stain to maintain consistency and clear coat to protect its natural state. Some sand the grains smooth, others keep the grain cut, that you can see & feel, to enhance its beauty. Of late, some have  even offered the Rift Cut Oak in various stain colors.

However, the introduction of “Skinny Shaker” has taken the cabinet industry by storm! Decorators and designers are demanding it, for their clients. The exact width and whether the edges are very square or rounded for “skinny shaker” varies from manufacture to manufacture. The smaller very clean shaker lines and the sleek flat interior of the door combine the best of traditional shaker and Scandinavian/ Euro flat panel, into a very modern looking door. This renders the traditional raised panel door as a relic of the past, which has disappeared almost completely from manufactures’ catalogs.

Now combine Rift Cut Oak and Skinny Shaker into a singular offering and you have the makings of a movement, with cabinets flying off the shelves!
